Head over to SPIN.com and take a listen, you won’t be disappointed! Elbrecht and Iddo Arad of Violens also sat down with SPIN to discuss the meanings behind some of these new songs, check out what they had to say below:

“Totally True”

Elbrecht: “That song is about being in some sort of relationship with someone who has a drug problem and is unfaithful, but the lyrics are pretty abstracted from that. It’s not really meant to clearly tell the story. I don’t think any of our songs are like that. But we were into this idea of having a chorus that was just one word. It’s a pretty classic kind of ’80s thing, but it’s also hard to come up with what word to say in the chorus and have this whole song be about this one word.”

“Der Microarc”

Elbrecht: “I collected sounds from horror movies. We went through a pretty laborious process of cutting out a lot of the ones that I wanted in there, but the rest of the band was like, ‘It’s too many weird chainsaw sounds.’ We pared it down to what’s there now. That’s my favorite part when we play it live.”

…to learn more about the meaning behind “True”, click here!

Tomorrow we will be celebrating the release of “True” with Violens at LPR + openers Kuroma and The New Lines….join us, won’t you? (click here for more details)
Man Forever is the weirdo beat project from Brooklyn underground genius and Oneida drummer Kid Millions. I’ve been listening to Oneida records for a long time and for me living in Denver they were this incredibly talented and tasteful instrumental psych band that shaped my musical tastes from an early age. It wasn’t until I moved to New York that I fully understood the bands contribution to underground music circles here and beyond. For this project Kid Millions recruits a solid pack of some of the best drummers from around the city and conducts an exercise in repetition and noise.

****************************************************************************************

Jillionaire has over fifteen years of experience and has created a unique sound which mashes indie dance and big room house with the caribbean rhythms of soca and dancehall. He has built up quite the resume that stretches an arms length including joining Major Lazer across the globe on a sold-out tour, curating the first Mad Decent showcase at Camp Bisco X, releasing his fair share of remixes and original tracks and plotting World Domination alongside the likes of Diplo.

To help you get acquainted with the man himself, we took some time to conduct this interview, which is a nice balance of funny and factual. Check it out beneath the cut!

In the game since:

Been in the game for years, it made me an animal. A cuddly koala bear.

What drew you in?

Money, hos and clothes. And all the free fruit and diet coke you get backstage.

Growing up in Trinidad, do you feel as though your approach to DJing will always showcase regional/tropical flavors?

Trinidad DJs are some of the best in the world. They have to play hop-hop & rnb, reggae & dancehall, soca, top 40. You have to be flexible and cater to very diverse tastes.

Given the tropical flavorings of your sets, do you ever find it bittersweet having to adjust to a venue in a suburban city like Albany as opposed to playing in an environment such as carnival or an outside setting? Do you feel as though this music is best suited in its roots of being outdoors/in warm weather or do you hope that the music transports the crowd there?

You just gotta bring the island vibes, mon. I got my coconuts, I got my hammock, I got my lil umbrellas for my pina coladas. But the thing about dancehall and soca is once it comes on everybody is gonna dance.

This month’s edition of Macaulay Culkin’s iPod is going to be a prom-themed affair. A king and queen will be crowned, there’ll be slow-dances, and probably some balloons. That’s a prom-y kind of thing right? Balloons?

The first time School of Seven Bells played LPR was during CMJ in 2008 right before the release of their first album Alpinisms. I distinctly remember hearing them open to a packed, haze-filled room with “iamundernodisguise.” Its eerie intro reminiscent of organum had me immediately hooked and I have been following the group closely ever since. Their third album Ghostory has been a resounding success and it’s great to see the band comfortably exploring the possibilities of their sound and aesthetic. If you haven’t heard the band yet, you better check ‘em out!
- Justin Kantor, co-founder
